Mr. T visit

Since KC-Star put in a 9-hour day at the Co-Op, I decided to ghost write her next Blog entry.

Mr. T flew in for a one week visit during the last part of May. We decided that he needed to see Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA. We drove up to Charleston, which is only a 4 hour trip from Fernandina Beach. We stopped at the USS Yorktown, which is an old aircraft carrier that was originally commissioned during WWII. It was located in Charleston Harbor, at Patriot's Point. Afterwards, we dropped our stuff off at the hotel, and then headed into the historic downtown area. We ended up at Market street, which has numerous cool restaurants, bars, and shops. After having a nice dinner, we strolled down to the Waterfront Park. After passing Rainbow Row, we finally made it to the Battery, which is where the Cooper and Ashley rivers meet. From the Battery, you get a pretty nice view of Fort Sumter, which is where the first real battle of the "War of Northern Aggression" occurred. We ended up walking back to Market Street, passing a number of beautiful historic houses and churches.

The next day (Sunday), we took another walk through the historic district and to the Battery. Once we hit the afternoon, we decided to visit the Magnolia Plantation. The plantation was beautiful; it was a former rice plantation with ornate gardens and ponds. We even saw an alligator in one of the ponds. After a few hours at the plantation, we drove down to Savannah, where we were going to stay the night. On Monday morning, we hopped on one of the tour trolleys, which gave us a bit of an overview of the city. We hopped off the trolley at the City Market. We walked down to the river and had lunch and some wine at Vic's, then turned around and headed back toward the town squares. Much of the historic area of Savannah is built on squares, which were initially built for military purposes. Now, the squares are all like minature parks. In any case, we looked at the historic houses, churches, and other cool attractions around Savannah (did not find the Frank Lloyd Wright house however) before we headed out of town. We drove down to Tybee island, where they have one of the most famous light stations in the south. After that, we headed back to FB (I had to work the next day).

On Tuesday, KC-Star and Mr. T headed to the Golden Isles of Georgia. Their first stop was Jekyll island, which used to be a private island to the idle rich (think Rockefeller, Carnegie, and the like). It had been turned over the the Georgia State Parks department in 1947. KC-Star and Mr. T had lunch on the island near the Jekyll Island Club hotel before heading to the Beach for some sun, or slow roasting as KC describes it. After taking a tour of the island, they drove past Brunswick and headed up to St. Simons. They visited the lightstation there and cruised the historic downtown. They had dinner at Barbara Jean's (excellent crabcakes and Southern cuisine), and saw a whole school of dolphins that were hanging out by the fishing pier. So, they ended up taking photographs of the sunset and the lighthouse at dusk (their pictures were great - I had left the tripod in the car for them - they OWE me).

On Wednesday, Mr. T needed some additional beach time (the beach is too nice here!). He became a beach addict, so they ended up lounging around on the beach the whole day. During the late afternoon, they managed to pluck themselves off the beach and headed to our neighborhood pool for a swim. KC-Star ended up having the complexion of a Charcoal briquet, while Mr. T even managed to get a bit of a tint.

Thursday was Mr. T's last day here. He was flying out in the afternoon. Hours before his departure, they headed down to St. Augustine for some shopping. They hit the mall before KC-Star dropped him off at the airport. Mr. T had a good time, and we both wish that his visit could have been longer.
